Essential Questions
August 16, 2009

Who am I? What is the right thing for me to do? What is my purpose? What does it all mean? How many times have you found yourself making a decision in hopes of finding the answer to one of these questions? How many times have you chosen someone to admire based on their answers and example in regard to these questions? Its important that we ask these things, and its important that we find our own answers to them. I don’t think there is an absolute answer to any of these questions, at least not one that could be proven once and for all yet. Below are the answers that I’m using for these essential questions. These answers are just my way of seeing things. You don’t have to accept them and feel free to critique them, or even add to them.
Who am I?
Short answer? You are. Long answer? This gets trippy.
Matter on the smallest level is being found to be connected to all other forms of matter in the universe. What science and quantum physics is finding out that religion has been saying for well over a millennium is that we are all connected. Or to put it like Full-Metal Alchemist did in this great episode “One is all, all is one.”
You and I are a piece of this incredible universe, and this incredible universe is all one thing. In fact the potential and wisdom of the entire universe as a whole sleeps inside of each one of us. We are a part of one another. When we hurt someone else, we are hurting a part of ourselves. When we help someone else we are helping a part of ourselves. All the wonder of the stars is not locked in some distant location, it is all around us, and it is us.
We are a sacred part, of this sacred universe. We as individual parts are infinite potential.
What is the right thing to do?
The right thing to do is what you believe is right to do. This goes back to the infinite that dwells within us. You have a conscience, it may be buried, but its there. Learn to listen to it. Learn to listen to that voice inside you that tells you what the right thing to do is. Be completely honest with yourself. When you are you may find that some things that didn’t used to bother you to do, may start bothering you and something that used to bother you, will start being okay.
So what if everyone took this approach of only doing what they believed was right? Wouldn’t you run into situations where people would believe in doing something stupid or even harmful? In some cases yes, but if you saw somebody causing trouble would you not find it right to help save others? The vast majority would not be doing something harmful, and those who would can be stopped from harming others by those who believe its right to defend people. Which would be the majority.
More directly as individuals, we become what ever we surround ourselves with. So take a look at who and what you are surrounding yourself with. The good news is that we can always use this to make ourselves in to something new.
What is my purpose?
Live honestly. If you doubt than don’t be afraid to doubt. This is how new questions and answers are found. This is one of the ways the world moves forward. If you don’t like what everyone else is doing, than don’t go with it, many of mans darkest times come about when people do what every one else is doing (for example, the macharena:D). If you feel like doing something that no one else wants to do don’t wait for everyone else. Do it. Our real desires, the ones that aren’t brought about by marketing propaganda, are there for a reason. Follow them. Its like Lao Tzu said
“At the center of your being
you have the answer;
you know who you are
and you know what you want.”
What does it all mean?
All of this universe is a miracle, and you and I are a part of it. We have the answers to life within us, it may take some digging, and it is not likely to be easy. Than again what part of life is easy? Its not like there is some magic plan that will make everything go perfectly. We have infinite potential, and we are all connected. So, what does it mean? Life is beautiful, and we are all in this together. Where it goes from here with your life is up to you.
