So you want to get your name out there, or you want to leave a good impression with someone. What if you’re trying for a raise at work? Maybe you want to launch a new business. The fact is that you can do almost any of these things with one simple trick. You have got to be helpful to others.

“You can have everything in life that you want if you just give enough other people what they want.” -Zig Ziglar

Here are the five ways that serving others can help you in your endeavors.

  1. You learn what others need. If you are doing everything in your power to be helpful for your co-workers, or potential customers, than you may run in to a consistent problem. This would be a good thing to either bring up in a meeting, or even build a business model around. After all, if its a consistent problem than you already know their is a need for the product, and if you’ve helped enough people you may even have a customer base.
  2. Establish credibility. The more people you are able to help in a particular area the more likely others are to start seeing you as an authority on whatever area your choosing to help them in.
  3. You start to stand out more. Which phone service would you say is best? How tempted are you to name the phone service that has been the most helpful?
  4. You connect with people. When you go out of your way to help someone else, than most of the time they are going to be thankful. You come across as a thoughtful person. This makes people want to be around you.
  5. You become a leader. If the best form of leadership is leadership by example, and you want others to be helpful for you (as I trust you do) than being helpful to others is the highest form of leadership. Real leadership is not position based; it is service based.

There are plenty of other ways that being as helpful to others as you can be sets you up to be more successful. What are some of the ways that you can think of?

Justin that is so true … I found that out during my early computer consultant years.

And following this principle I was fortunate to never had to do customer acquisitions. Never!

Because I came into my niche by accident during my university years and from then on people had just recommended me faster to their business friends than I could handle them. Have you ever heard of a consultant who never made a cold acquisition in his whole live? That's me.

And it was all about giving, giving, giving 1000% – and people recognize that fast and you don't have to fear unemployment or poverty anymore.

Just don't focus on what you can get and you will get it automatically.

Number 1 is a great point. Pundits love to speculate on what people want or don't want, like or don't like. Why not get "down in the trenches," help some people out, and figure out for sure what they're looking for?

Justin, I like all your points. The importance of serving others is often emphasized. But this is the first time I've ever seen the benefits one receives by doing so, laid out so clearly.

    Thanks!

i love point 2. Helping others sure is the way to establish credibility. And this is especially true for bloggers. Point 1 however hits the bullseye. To be aware of any business opportunity, you must first have the mindset of an entrepreneur. If you look for it real hard, you will find it.

    Justin,

I always say be a go-giver instead of being a go-getter. One of my success coaches and mentors always says "your level of success is determined by the amount of people you serve".
    Great post

    Excellent points Justin.

I can resonate with all of what you say but especially point 4 – to me it is all about serving and connecting with people. Many a time in my life I have made new friends and also business contacts simply by looking for ways of serving them.

For instance, I have just been for lunch with a couple of new friends and the intention was to see how I could support them with their new project. In return they have offered to help me market my books at their next exhibition! Before I met them, I had no idea they were even exhibiting and my desire to support their project now means 100s of my books being sold!

So the lesson for us all is this – look for ways and means to serve and give – and you will get so much more back. Of course the giving has to be done in the right spirit and with positive intention and not with an underlying expectation of getting something back.

Helping others is one of the best things that we can do as a human being. By helping we can not only achieve tangible benefits but also we can achieve happiness which is really hard to find these days.

    best wishes.

Your five ways are all excellent, especially points 2, 4, and 5. When you help others, you learn more and more about what to do that’s really helpful. What works well and what doesn’t. This increases your confidence in your ability to help. In my experience the more you help others, the better at it you become. And that’s a good feeling.
